Ferndale police have arrested two suspects wanted for the
shooting at a Sweet 16 party last month that left one teen dead and
another critically injured.

Police say a mother was drunk and driving around trying to find
her son’s school. An officer busted her when she approached him
asking for directions.

45-year-old Dena Ellington of Birmingham is charged with driving
drunk while taking her nine-year-old son to his first day of
school. She was arrested around 8:40 Tuesday morning at Taft School
in Ferndale.

Police say the officer was in the parking lot at Taft monitoring
school bus pickup that first day of school. That’s when they say
Ellington pulled up, got out of her car and asked the officer for
directions to her son’s school.

“She talked to the officer. He noticed that she exhibited signs
of being intoxicated. He investigated further and found out that
she was, in fact, very drunk,” said Ferndale Police Lt. Bill
Wilson.

Another officer arrived to take Ellington’s son to school. Her
Land Rover was impounded and she was arrested.

“He eventually brought her into the station and she blew a
breath test with a result of .29, which… numerical-wise is about
three times the legal limit,” Wilson said.

Wilson says Ellington could spend up to a year in jail for
driving drunk with her child in the car.

“Fortunately, this woman was in a parking lot of one school yard
without children there instead of finding the school that she
wanted to and endangering a bunch of other elementary kids that
would have been in the area,” said Wilson.
