East Lansing — With Notre Dame looming next week, Michigan State might have to guard against a letdown this week against Florida Atlantic.

East Lansing — Ever since freshman William Gholston set foot on Michigan State’s practice field, there was speculation the 6-foot-7, 260-pounder would make the move from linebacker to defensive end.

Defense ruled the day in East Lansing on Saturday as the Michigan State defense beat the offense, 45-32, in a controlled scrimmage at Spartan Stadium.

A welcome speech delivered by Michigan State’s Tom Izzo to approximately 500 youth basketball campers Monday morning revealed no clues about the coach’s future plans.

In a text message to The Detroit News Sunday, Michigan State coach Tom Izzo gave little indication of his future plans.

Message board and Facebook posters encouraged those who want Izzo to stay in East Lansing to congregate around the statue of Spartans standout Earvin “Magic” Johnson outside the Breslin Center at 9 p.m. Thursday.

Note the differences at Michigan State in 2010 as a head coach ponders moving to a new job. What would have been a terrifying, discouraging situation in years past could legitimately be viewed as an opportunity in East Lansing.

Once upon a time it was Michigan State that got into all the trouble. It was East Lansing where there were stability problems. There were too many bad teams. Too many changes in athletic directors. Way too many football coaches.
