The bet here is that two football teams from our back 40 are, in most eyes, being undersold heading into a new season. The Spartans can go 9-3 unless their kicking game betrays them, which is possible. Notre Dame has a new coach, a new quarterback — and a mean schedule in the first six weeks (Purdue, Michigan, Michigan State, Stanford, Boston College, and Pitt).

Tommy Izzo reminds me of these coaches I’ve admired through my years on active duty in sports journalism and now on the sidelines. But he reminds me mostly of another coach, who stayed, remained loyal, did not flit from job to job.

The coach answers questions from the media about his decision to stay at Michigan State.

To appreciate how different Tuesday night was for the Spartans, think back to the times at MSU when a press conference was called because an important coach was leaving.

Tom Izzo will remain coach of the Michigan State men’s basketball team, the university announced Tuesday night. “It’s been an agonizing week as I tried to make a decision about a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity,” Izzo said in a statement.

Tom Izzo wouldn’t even tell one of his young campers if he wants
to coach the Cleveland Cavaliers or stay at Michigan State. Izzo
was at his basketball camp Monday when a boy tried to get the
scoop, inquiring about the coach’s interest in jumping to the
NBA.

A welcome speech delivered by Michigan State’s Tom Izzo to approximately 500 youth basketball campers Monday morning revealed no clues about the coach’s future plans.

Scott, the former Lakers player who has coached the Nets and Hornets, could be the Cavaliers backup plan if Izzo stays at MSU. He was fired by New Orleans early this past season, and now works for ESPN.

Michigan State coach Tom Izzo will announce Saturday if he will stay at the school or pursue a job with the NBA’s Cleveland Cavaliers, according to a report on the Cleveland Plain Dealer’s website.
